'52 VH500 rear tyre size

Postby PeteL » Tue Jan 21, 2020 10:15 am

I thought the 20" front was going to be hard to get but an Avon ribbed SM is ordered.
Now I find that a matching Avon block SM for the rear in "19 X 3.25 is non existent ! I presume there would be no problem if I fit a 3.50 Avon on the rear ?

Thanks. I thought the 3.50 would be Ok. Just wondered if there would be a clearance problem or somthing.

HI their is no problem with with a 3.50 x 19 tyre some put a 400 x 19 on the rear but i don't know if their is clearance problem i think it is what type of chain guard you have to put a 400 x 19 on i am going to see if a 400 will go on one of my 350 nh with a swinging arm and try a 350 x 19 on the front wheel wen i have time :!: :)

If you want a good ride use the biggest section that will clear the chain and run it a bit softer. 4.00 is fine and I'm using a wider rim when I've been able to get them 350-19 is ok on the front also., Nev

350-19 is OK on standard WM2. 400 is best on WM 3 but a light 400 might be ok on a WM2 It's not ideal but I can't see why it would be unsafe See how it goes. There's a light 400-19 MITAS tyre available. Nev

Have a look at this Avon document. Scroll to the last page where it lists tyre sizes against rim width. They say 3.50 max size for a WM2.
https://www.avontyres.com/en-us/tyre-ca ... -us-lr.PDF

Based on my observations any clearance issues with a 4 inch would be between the sidewall of the tyre and the indetaion on the left side of the rera mudguard where it is profiled to clear the chain.

And, just for interest, if you look under royal enfield, which shows fitments for speedmasters/safety mileage/Roadriders, you will see the recommended tyre pressures. These pressures may be relevant to those who use these 'modern' construction classic Avon tyres on their Ariels. (basically for speedmasters front /safety mileage rear 25 front 29 rear (p.s.i).

Cheers

I have run 4.00x19 tyres from both Mitas and Avon on my 35 VH 500 with original rims for many years now with no trouble apart from a couple of punctures.
