Finally, I followed the advice on my cap and checked what "grade of oil" I should use. The 1937 handbook for singles mentions no winter oil at all, only Castrol XXL and other brands. Caps with recommendations for winter oil may be later or belong to other models.

The "E" in "WINTER", but the "R" is also incomplete.

So the story goes ,Castrol supplied the oil tank caps free to makers ,so their oil would be used ....Its also claimed tyres and chains were supplied free to manufactureres during the depression so that new owners might stay with the same brand.

And at that time multigrade oils were not invented, so don't believe what you read.

HI IT was duckhams oil that made the first multigrade oil for is Triumph motorcycle he wanted a better oil for his bikes and they found it very good for cars as well duckhams used my race car to develop more modern oil grades not just 20/50 i used it in all my engines but corstrol took them over and they stop doing it but they have brought it back out again for classic engine :?: :D :D

Not sure if it is correct although the rest of the bike pretty much is - the cap on my '37 VH lists Castrol XXL, Mobiloil 'D', Aeroshell, Motorine 'B' Deluxe with the word OIL in the centre. The word Patent is placed above Castrol XXL. The cap is very slightly domed.

Hi Bruce,

These are exactly the oils that are recommended in the 1937 owners' guide for singles. There is no mention of other oils for cold conditions. I have never started my engine in *really* cold conditions around freezing temperatures, but I find it's already harder to start the engine with SAE 50 oil when it's 10d Celsius or below. In the German owners' guide for 1938 they recommend Castrol AA and other oils for cold conditions, especially for the Square4, but not Castrol XL.
