The engine is a JAP 350 with a date letter that indicates 1929. I'm quite sure the cycle
parts are late 30's however. It's a neat piece of work except for the mis-match of the fins
at the joint. They make nice machines to ride being quite light. OK used Matchless engines as
well as JAP. A friend of mine has a 1937 250 with a coil ignition Matchless

that mis-match of the head & barrel is (I think) because it has a Ariel twin port head on it !

I agree that it's an Ariel twin-port head with the enclosed valve gear. Getting everything like
pushrods and pushrod tubes to line up, let alone the head bolts must have been quite a challenge.

I know Ariel increased the size of the finning on heads and barrels in, I think, the early 50s but i don't
know if there were any corresponding twin-port heads with bigger fins made. Bigger fins on the head
would have made a good job even better.

Incidentally, according to its engine number the JAP engine would have had a twin-port head originally.
