Vincent has send me this picture of an first model engine in front tricycle like mine, half front guard no rearguards.
They are in line for a run on the rightside of the road?, all wooden wheels and a Mercer? car in front, Renault? second.
November 1898 would fit.

It's a pity it's not a tiny bit clearer Adrie. The smaller writing on the no.17 sign could give a clue. There are a lot of vehicles for pre 1900. It must have been a big event.

The pic comes from here : http://ariel-motorcycles.jlbweb.fr/alb_ ... alogue.php
There is a second picture that could be from the same occasion, inside a hall with all (competitors?) lined up.
As it's a French website perhaps the pictures are also from somewhere in France, that would explain the lining up on the right side of the road.
Maybe someone who knows a lot about fashion could pin point the country or year?
Surely events like this where a novium in those days, there must be more pictures..............somewhere

The event is the Thousand Miles Trial, held in England in April 1900. The two cars in front are 12 h.p. Panhards: A17 was driven by none other than C. S. Rolls, later of Rolls Royce fame. There were several Ariels in the field, including the tricycle shown, another tricycle with a Whippet tandem attachment (basically a front-wheel-less bicycle somehow attached near the back of the tricycle, where a "passenger" sat and pedaled along using a Whippet 2-speed gear - think 4 wheels in a diamond pattern, the two central wheels in line with rider and passenger seats, and you'll get the idea) and an Ariel quadricycle.

There is only one relevant question; was there a watercooled 2-1/4 Ariel?
