Back gloss or satin cylinder barrel.

Postby ainsleybrand » Wed Jun 15, 2016 4:04 pm

Hello everyone,
I am new to the forum but not to The AOMCC. My VH is nearing the end of a 11 year restoration, and I will be bombarding the forum with questions if you don't mind :?: Living mostly in Spain the rebuild has taken a LONG time, and where do some of those parts go, there must be a parts devil living in my garage!
So, first off, and next job is painting the barrel. I have looked at the forum and would like to know if the original finish was satin or gloss. And next, although not urgent, does the oil pump gasket need jointing compound, or, in this modern world, are instant gasket products generally used.
Thanks, in advance for the help,
Ainsley

I would put your oil pump gasket in dry (using any other type of rtv/jointing/instant, risks getting some stuck in oil ways which is not desirable!). I'm not sure regards barrel paint, but mine is gloss.

Matt black might be the best choice.
Especially if you plan to actually ride the bike - it will disperse heat a little more effectively than shinier surfaces which might be useful in Spain.

I think they were originally a satin finish , which I think looks best.
The heat dispersion characteristics would be little different.
Mine was stove enamelled satin black in 1983 and is still mostly there and has never overheated.

Thanks for that, I have now ordered PJ1 satin black and the barrel is all masked up and ready to spray!
