The flat you mean? If so yes it should be there for the lock washer to locate to stop it from turning.

The drive end of the main shaft on my 1928 Model C does not have a flat like yours. The thread extends completely to the end and is 11/16"-20.

The single ball race driveshaft is shorter and sometimes has a grease nipple in the end to lube the cush drive. All shafts I have here have the flat ( Out of a 1930) but perhaps the earlier Page designed motors didn't have it, but the lockwasher P/n is 1299-28 so some at least, would have . IF you lock the two nuts together carefully I doubt you will have any problems. If you bottom it against the big washer firmly, you'd probably get away with one wider nut. Nev

I think you have put them on in reverse order.
a distance piece goes on first , then the sprocket, then sliding member + spring and then there should be a spring retaining plate/cup.
Or are Black Ariels different to later Red Hunters?

Yes, first a big washer, than the spring, the slider, sprocket and the nuths.

My 1928 model C has been drilled and split pin fitted, seams OK.
