Does anyone know if these were a factory option, an after-market thing or something people modified for themselves?

Seems like a good idea to be able to access the chain & engine sprocket without disturbing the clutch etc

As far as I'm aware cutting the chaincase outer is an owner mod!
(I'll make no comment on the descriptions of that single in the photo :? )

It does make swapping engine sprockets much less of a chore but you don't get something
for nothing. It can be tricky to say the least to seal the joint. Not a problem in it's day
when trialling or scrambling but in these times there can be unfortunate comments made.

I've seen a number of alloy chain cases on different marques with the engine sprocket bulge modified in a similar fashion. One in particular was an AMC twin. It was obviously done by somebody that knew how to machine as it was very tidy and appeared factory spec. As a bonus too it could be a damage limitation device if the engine sprocket should come a drift!!
