Hello Folks
A quick update.
I put the battery on charge (although it was near fully charged anyway).
Following Simon's advice, I took the Solex Off, separated the carb & float chamber and I filled the chamber with water - yes the water came through into the well. I also revisited the BiStarter, I think the 3 positions are now OK.

I reassembled the carb. Part of the Float Chamber casting goes into the bottom of the carb casting and into the Choke Tube, it fits over the Emulsion Tube (the brass thing with holes in it). There seems to be no sealing between the two cast parts - I think this is correct - no seals or washers are listed but if I'm wrong doubtless someone can correct me.

Plugs are NGK B5 HS with about 250 miles on them, they spark. Battery system is similar to Simons (2 Yuasa sealed batteries to give about 24Ah).
I fitted a new coil.

Then I tried a start using Easy Start spray - no sign of life at all, I also tried probably 15 kicks with petrol on, not a glimmer.

I'm beginning to lean back towards Ignition Issues - can someone look at my earlier post describing the ignition wiring ?

I will be out of action for some days - the Volvo decided to have sympathy with the 4G - most of the Warning Lights have come on and so its having the onboard computer checked.

But 4G inspiration is most welcome.

Best regards
Chris in Tokyo

Hi Chris,
If you suspect your wiring, you can hot wire your coil straight from battery
and then you should have some life in your motor.

We might now be into the ignition issues.

So, remove the distributor cap, take hold of the rotor arm with one hand and try to kick the engine over. If you can do this without the rotor arm turning, the fibre drive gear to the distributor has stripped. If it turns ok, then I need a detailed description of the coil conversion before I can offer much more help. For instance, does the lead to the coil come from the end cover of the mag? If so, is the brush in the end cover re-inforced with a spring behind it?

It may well get more detailed than this!

I wonder if there is some sort of primary resistance circuit in the setup,or coil, that has burned out,or shorted.......these resistors generally restrict coil current after a minutes running ,so that points dont burn......Sometimes built into a coil, sometimes ,external mounted on the coil, sometimes just a part of the wiring........generally ,coil ignition draws too much current for magneto points to handle very long....they burn out.

I am away from the bikes for some days.
I was trying to post a picture of the coil conversion showing the modified Contact Breaker - failed dismally.
How do I attach or insert the picture ?

Regards
Chris.

You have to go to Full Editor and there is a button Img,
where you can insert image.

I hope its attached.
You can see its a purpose made conversion and not just a simple rehashing of the magneto points.
