QD hub dismanteling

Postby Vincent.vanGinneke » Tue Sep 10, 2019 4:14 pm

Is it possible to take a QD hub apart ?
Are the flanges pressed on to the centre tube or are they fixed by welding ?
I cant see any trace of (spot)welding so I think they are pressed together.

Yes, I want to convert a 5 bolter in to a 3 bolter to fit the drum :)
A 3 bolter has a ring with 12 holes fitted at the large flange side, but to get it there I have to take of one of the flanges.....

And,...Wanted: a QD spindle for a rigid frame 3 bolter, these are thinner then the plunger spindles

Hi Lee, no not for sale, I have the 3 bolt brakedrum and the 5 bolt hub.
Question was if it is possible to take of one of the spoke flanges.

I would say yes, pressed together.........Ive just done a similar job with Enfield wheels on a Panther.....a prewar Panther/ Enfield and a 1954 Connie rear were ground to exactly the same dimensions.........but be careful to get the hole alignment correct,or your spoke pattern will be wonky.

I've seen the spot welds on one of mine. Would you design them with just an interference fit there?!
cheers

Tele front hubs are pressed together so perhaps these also ?
The tube part on a tele front hub is stepped to give a ridge where the drum stops against.
Once the spokes are tensioned there's no where to go for the flanges I would guess.
I wil mark the parts before I take them apart .

I would suggest using a backup that bears close as possible to the centre tube part of the flange......dont just press against the raised ring..........The Enfield wheels pressed apart easily, very little force was needed, and the ground surface of the tube was dimensionally identical between hubs.............ususal precautions, watch closely whats happening.........Spot welds in heavy steel always leave a depression ,and are easily seen if the part is clean.

John, yes , I am going to turn something up on the lathe. something thick in two parts to clamp it around the tube.
And then…..I'll see !
