1931 Ariel LB

Postby Bob.Murphy » Thu Oct 17, 2019 10:05 pm

A friend (not a club member) has recently acquired this 1931 Ariel LB, 250cc side-valve. It is a nice little bike that goes well and sounds good. It certainly isn't concourse but its all there.

A neighbour, an Electronics Engineer, is attempting to get the '3-brush' dynamo to work. I supplied the wiring diagram from this site ;) .

There isn't a speedometer - so it now has an electronic thing for a bicycle and the oil pressure gauge isn't connected (to what?). The silencer appears to be a 'special', modified to clear the stand.

A fine little bike with potential.

Question: What is that threaded Hex fitting that's part of the rear stand (next to the spring attachment) ??

Was there a handle there to help pull the bike back onto the stand ?

Curious :? .

Id say it was there to limit the stand upward position ,probably to stop it hitting the mudguard,or even to keep the spring taut.....Appears to be brazed on.

Very nice indeed and original. I would change those red abiko's
to clamp ones with black heat shrink.

I am not sure but perhaps the rear lifting 'Y' shaped stays are mounted the wrong way round ?

Nice Ariel ! thanks for showing.

I also think the rear Y stays are mounted wrong, which is why the rear section of the mudguard does not follow the curve of the main section. This image from Drags shows the correct orientation of the Y stay. The vertical one that is fitted to the LB in the photo would therefore go to the hinged section of the mudguard.

The stay is the right way for 1931 but it's the wrong stay.

I should have checked before I posted :( , Adrie is of course correct... the 31 LB has a totally different rear mudguard setup to that shown on the Drags site

The cover over the gearbox and the cover in the middle of the clutch dome indicate it as a 1932 model.
