No Drive in top gear

Postby ian.scott » Sun Oct 05, 2014 9:57 am

Hi, I wonder who can guess the answer to my problem.
I finished the Levis Trial on my 35 VH last weekend with no problems. The next time I took the bike out was last night and after 3 miles , I felt a tug at the back end. Couldn't see anything wrong so carried on another couple of miles before the drive in top gear ceased with a high pitched grating howl.
I stopped and found that the primary side is OK as it kicked up again no problem. The clutch is still attached as it was possible to free the clutch and select a gear but it would drive OK only in the lower gears.
I shall be dismantling it next week to find out.

I suspect that may be a bush working it's way out of where it is supposed to be and stopping the gear from engaging cleanly

The big nut at the chainwheel for the rearchain might have come lose.

No, a bit more serious than that, The broken bit of tooth obviously got caught and then split the box.
Now to start seeing what bits I have to build into another box, I already have a casing.

Oh Dear!

I suppose the only consolation is that the rear wheel didn't seize, or if it did, not for long enough to cause you any physical harm.

No, the wheel didn't seize at all in fact I rode on for a couple of miles before I could find somewhere to pull in. I think I could probably have ridden home in 3rd gear, in fact I might as well have done as there wasn't much of the gearbox that was re-usable.

Hi,
I lost a tooth on the sliding gear in my CP. Fortunately, the tooth simply ended up suspended in the grease without causing further damage. That said I was never aware of it happening.

I guess this sort of thing must be pretty rare though. These boxes were used by Vincent so are pretty sturdy, as well as AJS. It is however a sobering thought since, the box can't be disengaged from the rear wheel as it can from the engine, by the clutch.
