Is that an Alton alternator at all? I've one on one of my singles and it makes a similar racket.

No, it's not an Alton - it's a polish made dynamo sold by some germans on ebay; take a look; http://www.old-motorcycle-parts.com/dynamo-l-e3lm-1.html

As Steve stated the Alton makes the same noise when the engine is turned over due to the permanent magnets in the unit. As soon as the engine is started and the alternator is spun faster the noise disappears due as the permanent magnets no longer pull one way or the other on the gear. nothing to worry about.

David is correct, reading the description on the ebay listing, I'm fairly sure that they are permanent magnet alternators. My Alton on my single makes the exact same noise.

They make quite a racket for sure, but a funny thing, my Alton on my Huntmaster doesn't make that noise at all
