The detergents in a modern oil will release all the old carbon that is stuck on the internal walls of an old engine in to the oil. As there is no oil filter in a square four these bits of carbon accumulate in the sludge trap very rapidly blocking the feed to the big end. Resulting in a rapid, unplanned, deconstruction of the engine.

Thanks, all done, had the engine stripped, cleaned out etc. On another subject, can you tell me the carb flout height setting for the SU?

I set mine as follows - from the edge of the cap to the float lever is 7/16”. On the picture below, with the float needle closed, a bar of 7/16” diameter slides easily in the gap. I cannot recall where I got this information from.

Thanks, you are correct, 7/16’’ or 11mm. See photo. Found another trick, if your SU throttle does not always seem to close at the same point giving slight differences in tick over, add two ball point pen springs to the inner cable, saves a lot of dismantling and works. Just push them on from the middle of the spring and it will jump on. See photo. (Yes I know, I have a few rusty bits).
