My Sq 4 hates me!

Postby Gui.dorey » Fri Jun 12, 2020 6:43 pm

It‘s official - she hates me! She wants to be a garage queen, but I will force her to like me one day.

I was having a lovely late afternoon ride, and then it happened on the way home...

Accelerating through the gears coming out of a village, and suddenly she started backfiring and missing very badly and died. Tried to restart and nothing. Tried to jump start in 2nd with my mate pushing me and nothing. Checked the fuses, fuel, connections and nothing. After a lot of head scratching took off the distributor cap, but found nothing until I grabbed the distributor finger. It just rotated freely!

Pulled the thing off and there it was - the pin on the gear had shorn off :( Next gave my insurance a call to send a tow...

Fortunately after a first inspection back home the worm gears are fine. I was able to get the rest of the pin out and all the metal bits. The head gave on one side and the pin wandered out the other side until it caught on the housing, bending it and pulling it out of the distributor gear.

I‘m not talking to my Sq 4 for the rest of the weekend. I shall take the BSA out just to show her!

What you have to remember is that life with a SQ4 is always exciting... Whenever you get a little over confident, there will be some niggle that arrives to upset your day.

Expect the worst and nothing will happen!
cheers

I think you should talk it a bit or it will be worse next time!

You need to talk to your Ariel in the same way as you are talking to the plants in your windows.

Perhaps you should cease talking to it as a cantankerous old hag or a spoilt teenage super bitch - treat it merely like the inanimate lump of metal & sundries that it is & book yourself in for a couch session with your local trick cyclist...

Same thing happened to me except that there was some friction between the distributor shaft and the drive gear so the rotor arm continued to rotate when I turned the engine over. I couldn't understand what had happened and reset the timing several times before I discovered the sheared pin.

I haven't had this happen on a Mk I / Mk II but I have had it several times on the Cammy, seen (and sorted) it on someone else's 4G and even had the armature shaft shear on the magneto of the Red Hunter. On the Cammy / 4G you learn quickly what to look for. The Red Hunter one baffled me for ages.
