Lucas C35SD Dynamo

Postby simon.holyfield » Tue Nov 05, 2013 11:42 am

Folks,

I'm about to get around to rebuilding my SQ4 dynamo. Can someone please tell me how it is finished?

For example, I believe the end cap should be grey. What about the body? Is it painted or plated? I guess the aluminium casting is self-coloured?
cheers

Hi Simon

I'm not sure about the end cap, painted or chromed but the body should have good contact to base .
I chromed the end piece and zinc plated the body.

I think the end cap was chrome and the body was Cad plated.

Simon
my 51 model had a dirty kind of dark grey on the cap - I assume originally black but it faded over the years. With the shortages in the chromium department due to the korean war I would not think this was meant to be plated for this period. I must admit though I got mine chrome plated on my continuing restoration as it looks a whole lot better.
The main body of mine has got most of its original plating on and is possibly nickel
Hope this helps
Mark

Excellent, thanks folks. My end cap was/is black; hopefully there is some plating left...
cheers

My '51 is the same as Mark's. Nickel I believe and a painted end cap. I have a spare dynamo and it is also nickel plated but not as nice so I will probably re-plate some time in the future.
