Adding an oil pressure gauge.. Sq 4 mk ii

Postby pauldridge » Mon Sep 26, 2016 12:11 am

If I ever get my mark II trashed engine Back Together I want to add an oil pressure gauge to the engine

Especially since I have the Morgo oil pump

I installed a nice gauge kit on my Norton Commando a while back but after looking at the external oil pipes on the Ariel I am at a bit of a loss as to where I would connect a pressure gauge

Any advice or comment would be appreciated

Just mimic the Ariel design Paul. The banjo at the base of the timing chest, that feeds the rockers, has a line taken up under the tank for the gauge.

Simon,
Thanks for that reply.. perhaps I am missing something, but I did spend a good bit of time looking at that connection, and I don't see any way to add a second "piggyback" banjo to that threaded or pressed in stud on the timing chest, unless I have missed a secondary outlet? Of course, my particular year did NOT initially have the oil pressure gauge in the tank.

On the Norton, the banjo feed is held by a hollow banjo bolt of correct length, and the gauge supplier provided a longer similar bolt to accommodate a second stacked banjo to feed the gauge, but that obviously won't work here, I don't think.

best,
Phil

It's a special banjo Paul - it has two pipe outlets, side by side, and the two pipes are solder together so that they follow the same route until they split above the rocker box.

I'll see if I can find a picture.

When I did my Sq 4 Mk2 rebuild with a Morgo oil pump I was advised by Bruce Longman to run the rocker feed off the oil return to avoid top end over-oiling. I was then able to run a feed from the timing chest to a handlebar mounted oil gauge using a single banjo.

The other approach, to the same end, is to use the small line for the top end and the larger line for the gauge, both from the same timing chest banjo.
