Ariel VH 500 - could it be an NH ?

Postby ChrisNewton » Wed Apr 05, 2017 3:38 pm

Hi

recently purchased a bike with VH Status - Log book says 500-cc has VH on the engine plate - i have a load of receipts for bits including a new piston that has the 500 piston part number

However the engine number is definitely an NH number

could it be a 500 running a 350 bottom end ? are they the same ?

has 7 plates in the Clutch

is there a way of identifying a 500 engine externally :?:

VH barrels have a thick bottom flange.

My VH has always had 1956 NH crankcases 'cos that's all I had available when I built it.
The cases are the same, crank/rod/piston/barrel/head ain't.
Barrels are relatively easy to identify externally (iron-head type with separate push-rod tunnels have a thick bottom flange - as Ian shows), the rest might be more difficult (maybe check the stroke by using wire in the spark-plug hole?)

As it is an alloy head engine, telling the difference between 350cc and 500cc versions is easy. The 500cc version has a 5th head stud between the rocker boxes on the timing side. The 350cc version makes do with only 4 studs.
