Singles timing chain

Postby robjameson » Mon Sep 18, 2017 7:02 pm

I've been given the impression (from my usual chain supplier) that there are no decent 1/2 x 1/8 chains available any more.

I'm interested to see what everyone has been doing with theirs, or indeed if anyone has been brace enough to try a good quality bicycle chain?

Any ideas?

Hi Rob,
Have you tried this supplier yet ? If not then give them a ring, they were very helpful with some old small sized chain I needed for an old Honda engine:-

Regards,
Keith.
PS. Drags sell them but the one they supplied me with wasn't as substantial as the old one it was replacing.

Thanks Keith, I'll contact them.

I am aware that drags sell them, but I sent it back as I wasn't happy to use the type of link they supplied with it.

Talk to Andy, the chain man (google him) he sells Iwis chains which are about the best you can get. He is a supplier of chains to motor racing teams long term and knows his stuff. He claims to have shares in Renolds, but does not recommend their chains as they are nowadays made in the Far East and nowhere near the quality they once were. He will be giving a talk at the VMCC Brooklands section next month if anyone is interested in coming along to hear what he has to say.

Interesting, it was Andy that said to me that there wasn't a supplier of good quality chain any more!

I'll take a trip over to the local guy at the weekend and see what that one is like.

Ah, so Iwis probably don't do that size chain then.

I had a simple conversation with the local bearing supplier yesterday and was able to purchase both new primary and timing chain for a VERY reasonable price, and I'm very happy with the quality.

The very creatively named....derby bearings!

I've used them before for chains, bearings and seals, they are right next door to what used to be wilemans motorcycles, and used to supply him - so they know what they are looking at when it comes to old kit.

A quick update: I was sufficiently worried about using two split links on the chain supplied to me by my local supplier, so I decided to buy another one from sprockets unlimited at the Stafford show today.

He recommended I try a 1/2x3/16 chain, which is something that some Scott owners have apparently been doing for a similar application.

I feel something of a guinea pig in this, but at £10 for an iwis chain, I thought it would be worth a go...
