There is a simple method used to check timing.....hold the plug lead in you hand and put thumb over the sparkplug hole.You will get a bite exactly as compression blows your thumb off the plughole...If its on the other stroke,its obvious.

You should check your cam plate, it can be wrong way if you get spark in 6 o'clock.
