1939 VA front mudguard removal

Postby klaus gerhard » Mon Oct 15, 2018 7:20 am

Last weekend I tried to remove the front mudguard from the girder forks of my 1939 VA. I am sure cutting the fork tubes is not the way to go. Even pressing the mudguard by hand did not provide the room to get it out. The bracket to fix the mudguard to the forks is welded on. Any advice?

Thanks Klaus

It's not difficult to make a new strap if you have to cut the other to get it out of the fork. When it's off you can clean the welds off and rebolt the new strap to the guard. nev

Bit involved but...do those fork spindles loosen off to let the girder legs pull apart (or even remove one side) ?
(Maybe the forks have to be built around the mudguard before fitting to the frame  )

Looking at the parts book the bracket on the top centre of the valanced mudguard appears to be narrower than that on the normal mudguard (the 'ears' with the bolt holes are not at the extreme edge of the valanced guard. This would allow the mudguard to be removed with the bracket in place. It would also mean that a spacer would be required between the mounting point and the 'ears' of the bracket. Drags do list a spacer for the centre bracket...4720-29.
Drags also have a picture of a valanced front mudguard 4700-34. Again the centre bracket does not extend fully to the outside face of the mudguard. They suggest that mounting the mudguard with the centre bracket in place is very difficult suggesting the bracket is bolted on afterwards as suggested by Nev.

Based on all this I think your bracket has been added after the mudguard was in place?. As Nev says cut it off and then make a new narrower one to allow the mudguard to be fitted with it in place or bolt the bracket on after fitting the mudguard.

I don't think it is an original bracket since the end is square. Original Ariel brackets have rounded ends. So cut it off, repair the mudguard and make a new bracket (with rounded ends).

Maybe a little late but here are some photos and a drawing I did of my original bracket for the same front mudguard
