It's quite possible. There are two pairs of springs, a heavy set which centres the lever and a lighter set which moves the selector. I've seen the die cast spring housing crack, the springs stick and I've seen springs of mixed stiffness.
Before you go in there though, let's try and determine if it's any different from others. The military lever is very long and obviously makes a much longer stroke.
