Hi Lee,
This is a rigid '51 KH rear guard. I'm pretty sure it is original.
The bottom shape is a bit messy as it has the remains of a rubber mud flap still attached.

My 1953 plunger VHA has the same mudguard as MH-39-DN and PTD849, it should have a BSA boxed numberplate support (not in any picture) without the extra boxed light extention (that came in 1955), Ariel had it's own boxed plate in 1954 (like MH-39-DN and PTD849) .

I don't know how many 1953's had the BSA boxed plate or when the new (own) boxed 1954 model started.

Thank you too all everyone help and photos of there guards it's surprising how much they all vary. I started making the tail end yesterday. I have something that cut out and shaped but I'm having a hard time getting the and the curves correct. Once I got one in the second curve is harder too get right. I knew this would be the hardest thing to do so I had too put more cuts in it to get it to bend where I want it too. I had a break for abit and put my speedo back together, today I'm going to have another go at the mudguard I'm not going to give up just yet. Ardie my 53 came with the ariel boxed number plate. Lee

My 53 was shipped in the fall of 52. Mine also as you can see it has the box number plate BUT the first owner installed it .When you remove it ,you can see the holes for the original old style number plate .I suspect he did this for safety reason re brake light.

Or 1953 was the year the government wanted you to have a brakelight so the Ariel factory used the BSA model until they had theire own.
