Adrie you may know a thing or two about Ariels, but you certainly do know nothing about nautical signs!
Realy not every one is smoking cannabis Holland.... This just means: ''plaats om te keren'', or ''you may turn here with your boat''...

Cruquius steam drainage pumping station is realy a very interesting place to be!

Good Lord :o :

Is that eight vertical cylinders, each powering a beam pump ??

How big is the boiler (and what pressure does it run) ??

I guess its not an "Atmospheric Engine" ;) .

It has a line of boilers so there is constand steam, there where more of these pumps in line and it's made in England.

Sounds like the wheel turns full circle (pardon the pun).

It was a Dutchman (Cornelius Vermuyden ) who drained the English Fens in the 1650s - using wind power.

Its good to see the products of Birmingham (presumably) still working 100+ years on (just like the Indian Railways  ).

Ah - a single (Bloomin' Great) piston.

The only trouble with that is that all pumps have to be working at the same time. You couldn't (easily) take one out of service for maintenance.

Thanks for the info, fascinating stuff.
