Be interested to see what you do. The Venhill one shown in your photo looks a good bit of kit but at £99 a bit on the expensive side.

Cheers

I considered making one too, and gave up because I didnt have the technology!
I thought the key part was the depth of the slots which clamp the cable, plus you need a milling machine and the right diameter spherical end mills. Please give us a blow by blow account.

The ones above dont seem to have been milled spherical they look like they have been machined square , which is what im going to do , but no harm done if it is a failure . I'll picture the results .

Hi

I made one using two pieces of angle iron clamped together in a vice bolted to the table of a pillar drill, drilled the small diameter then counter drilled the larger. For the punch I just use a parallel pin punch - it doesn't bird cage the inner quite as prettily as a domed one would but when the nipple is filled with solder who can see it?

Regards Mick

Guy,
Nice job. You could always touch the bottom of the square counter-bore with a drill bit or countersink to give you a V at the bottom of the birds-nest.

I haven't got a mill so I think I'll give Mick's method a go

I have done as you suggested Alan and it is a better result . First in picture is obviously before the alteration .

Tidy swages those. I think I had better improve my swaging tool if this is the new standard!
