Side Stand Picture request

Postby timelliott » Fri Feb 28, 2014 9:08 am

Hello, I have purchased a side stand from Draganfly - pictured.

Has anyone got one of these fitted and able to take a couple of photos close up to show me how it fits?

Thanks in advance, Tim

Hi Tim,
Here is a photo of a 1951 sidestand with the extension welded on to the foot. To get the foot to swing properly through its arc of roughly 50 or 60 degrees you may have to do some grinding with a Dremel of the stopping surface of the stand. There is a lot of force on the bolt so don't use just any old one but order the 2459-48. I don't trust these stands and have only ever put one into use when the rear stand on one of my bikes broke.
I hope this helps, Chris Shearwood

Thank you all very much .. so it's the bolt that holds some tinware on ? My brake lever is much lower than on that picture and it gets in the way.. 1948 RH

Hi Tim,
You have confused me with your comment about tinware. Could you please elaborate? To what does the "1948 RH" at the end of your message refer? Do you still need advice with regards to fitting that sidestand?

+1 - I had a side stand like that on my '53 Square four (back in the early 70s 8-) ).

One warm day I parked it up on the sidestand and was talking to some mates when I caught some movement out of the corner of my eye. I just got to the bike before it fell over - the stand had punched a hole in the tarmac  .

Its far too close to the bike and the leverage on it is immense.

Bob.

Sorry meant to type VH .. i think this won't fit, doesnt look to be anywhere to fit it. Either way I might not bother now due to previous feedback.

Thanks, Tim

Hi Tim,
Maybe a good idea. I have one on the square four and so far all it's done is ruin the left muffler when I've cornered mildly.. I honestly wouldn't trust it. I can take a photo if you want though.
I have one of those clamp on 'universal' side stands on my VH - as you see on eBay and this works reasonably well.
Interestingly, 30's VH's had RH on the timing cover - ie RH 250, 350 or 500.
How is the bike coming along?

My experience is a little different as I have found the stand satisfactory provided it is not used on soft ground as the foot is only small. On a VH it is high enough not to scrape when cornering, the footpegs scraping first.
the photos below show my stand fitted to a 49VH. This particular stand is one that I had sand cast in aluminium bronze using an original as the former for the sand mould.
