Paul_Linden wrote:Yes, completely serious. The machine takes tablets (i don't use a liquid) that really cleans off stubborn oil residue. Helps if you rub some gunk over the cases first and let it soak in. I take cases out as soon as the washing cycle has finished and dry them off by hand with a rag. I don't use it on iron parts (especially heads and barrels) as the chemicals and the temperature leave some oxidation marks.

Well thanks for the tip Paul. I did try it once with an old Bantam head and you are right, it certainly removes the greasy muck. I was a bit afraid of the chemical in the dishwasher tabs, corroding precious alloy - Bantam heads are a bit more obtainable than SQ4 engine parts!
cheers

Great Photos! Having never seen the innards of a Square Four, I was surprised to see the flat topped combustion chamber, no room for hemispheric head valve mechanism I guess. Also that black stuff on the inside of the timing case. Is that a coating or a gasket of some kind? Fascinating!

I think that black stuff is probably sludge like wot you get from non-detergent (or maybe low-detergent) oils,,,,,, :)
