Speedometers

Postby James Hickman » Tue Sep 12, 2017 12:25 pm

My 1951 NH project is missing its Speedometer.
I know I need a Smiths Chronometric 0-120, with the trip adjuster knob sticking out the back. I don't really want a repro' and have a search running on eBay.
However they are not cheap....
How do I know if a secondhand speedo is right from my machine? (And does anyone know of a resource for checking Smiths/Jaeger speedo applications for other members?)
The front of those I have seen have two numbers. See the picture attached as an example- one number just below the centre (1550) and a longer (?serial) number below that (S467/163/N)

I think the nh was fitted with 80MPH speedo.

They are cheaper but expect to pay at least £150-200, plus rebuild costs.

Gaggs site will tell you a lot about the different Smith speedo's and help you to identify what the model is and to which machine it was fitted. kind regards

The S467/163/N is the 'model number' for the speedo - I have this sheet showing Smiths speedo applications to Ariels.

The 1550 is the 'turns per mile', which equates to cable rpm at 60 mph.

No idea where it came from...

The S497 is the important bit. I think the other two variables refer to the bezel type and the length of the trip meter cable. Incidentally, the flex speed for Ariel chronometrics is 1610. Ariel PA speedos run at 2240.

Thanks for the replies.
Anyone have a table like Simon's that goes back to 1951?

this is a photo of an original 1949 speedo with original face. as it is in a panel tank the last 2 numbers may be different due to the long stalk on the trip speedo for the panel tank.

I know it does not help with the specific question but I have attached the Smiths 1954-1958 speedo listings.

Maybe ADMIN could put a copy in the websites Misc document section.

It's already in the document section as a word document, follow: Document repository/generic/smiths speedos

Pete
Yes it is, that is the Document Simon posted above. The PDF I posted also lists all other makes so may be useful as a cross reference.
