Ariel 3 Shenanigans

Postby StewartPorter » Mon Apr 01, 2019 9:38 am

Morning all
Well, I've gone and done it again. Yesterday, while on the way to do mother's day duties, I collected a '79 Ariel 3. Or rather a large lump of rust masquerading as an Ariel 3. My god it's a mess! Worse than it looked in the pictures if thats possible  :D
But, hell, it was only 50quid and its not as if I've got too many irons in the fire at the moment -(I'm collecting another bantam in York on the way home from the AGM this weekend as well !)
I've always been intrigued by them. They make me think of the Bond Bug - another creature I lust after- in that they were lurid futuristic, death-traps yhat can't fail to put a smile on your face :)
I'll post some pics when I wrestle it from the back of the car later. Fortunately spares are available, many from the excellent Mopedland, so I hope to be thrashing it to within an inch of its 30mph top speed for next summer - its bottom of the priority list just now ;)
Anyway pics to follow and I'll use this post as an update.
All the best
Stewart

I remember them being launched and saw my first one at the AOMCC Annual Rally at Caddington (?) in 1970/71 - what a disappointment, we were hoping for a "Triumph Trident"-type bike  .

Anyway, enjoy your new challenge - here's what to aim at (taken at the Transport Extravaganza at Glamis Castle in 2016).

If its any consolation I'm restoring two Tiger Cubs . . . can't think why . . . probably because a couple of friends have Velocette 'LEs'. They're each costing as much as a Bonneville to restore  .

Bob.

That's just like mine, Bob. "Bushfire Orange"! Ariel3- the new Ariel triple! First registered in Dundee, I actually picked this up just acouple of miles from Glamis in Newtyle from an old guy with a yard full of gorgeous old cars; an old jowett, fiat topolino, austins, rovers a couple of Lanchesters........and a super gorgeous '30s V4 Lancia - drool
He also put me on to another guy nearby him who has "dozens" of old bikes and 'bits'. Next trip up.......
A Cub is high on my list too. Had one as a kid for scrambling. Missed out coupla months ago on a total bargain for one :o
Good luck with them

Hmmmmmmm, it sounds as though Ariel knew what the Industry's reaction to this abomination was going to be   .

The Bastard child of a lawn mower and a Moulton bicycle  .

Should be fun though.

Bob ;) .

I think you have some work to be done, before it looks the same!

Just a thought, if you ditched the engine and fitted a small electric motor could you ride it without all the hassle of registering it, tax, insce etc.. effectively like an electric pedal-bike?
