Vehicle recovery for MOT exempt bikes

Postby pete.collings » Sun Jul 28, 2019 10:59 am

My insurance renewal from Carol Nash includes a premium for a vehicle recovery service underwritten by AXA, but the AXA policy details states the bike must have a current MOT. I have emailed Carol Nash asking for a definitive reply as to whether my VH, as a MOT exempt vehicle with no current MOT, will be covered by the AXA scheme, and am awaiting their reply. Having sold my V50 guzzi earlier in the year, the VH is my only bike to be covered.
I understand this is a general problem within the classic vehicle movement, but wonder if anyone within the UK has insured with a specialist classic insurer that will offer recovery for MOT exempt vehicles, and if so with whom. I am likely to do a very limited mileage with the VH, but would still like to have a recovery to home option.
I have run a simple search within the forum, but have not yet come across any relevant posts.

Any feedback gratefully received, my current policy expires early next month.

I asked about this with Carole Nash earlier this month and was informed that the MOT stipulation would only be applied to bikes that were legally required to have one.
Otherwise the machine would just have to be 'roadworthy' - but that's a general requirement for on-road use anyway.

'55 Huntmaster, '56 VH, ' 51 VH, '80 R100RT, '00 Sprint ST (but all those Ariel parts can only make one running bike...)

There was a long thread on the VMCC Forum here: ... t=recovery
I think it will be viewable by non members. The gist is that, as Simon says, you are OK if your machine is MOT exempt - but some people have had bad experiences.
