PTFE tape on fuel tap unions ?

Postby Si.Panter » Sun Aug 18, 2019 7:57 pm

Hi all
Can I use PTFE tape on fuel tap unions, or should I go with a dab of squeezy gasket ?
Thanks

PTFE tape is used on tapered pipe threads. If the threads are parallel the sealing is by some mechanism other than the threads. For BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel) threads tightening the nut on the threads presses two pieces of metal against each other (i.e. the rounded end of the pipe and its mate on the tap) and that metal-to-metal contact is what seals the joint. Teflon tape on the threads won't do any harm, but it won't do any good, either. If there is a problem with the metal-to-metal seal the joint will leak whether or not tape is on the threads.

you do not need to put on PTFE or gasket sealer on unions if they leak lap the two parts against each other with fine grinding paste and a good seal washer on tap to tank

I rub a bar of soap on the threads, until the thread is full, and use fibre washers. Seems to work alright.

Soap is an old time fix for leaks in petrol tanks.....it sets solid in petrol.
