Oil pressure gauge fittings

Postby Davegeary » Fri Oct 19, 2018 10:27 am

Hi All,

I am struggling to purchase the plumbing to reinstate the oil gauge on my 1940 vb... The bike came to me without pipework, just a blank at the timing chest... I’m no expert but the gauge looks original so ideally I’d like to keep it if at all possible. The Eurika gauge fitting has a small female connection that appears to be 1/4 whitworth.

I’m hoping someone in the club can point me in the right direction for a supplier and or offer advice on a best course of action I should take.

Best Regards Dave Geary

I'm pretty sure the last ones I bought came from here:

https://www.completeautomobilist.com/ca ... s-fittings

You'll find the gauge threads are BSPP - original fittings have BSW size hexagons, but having changed my set up slightly moderns ones may not, which might be a nuisance. The thread into the engine is probably BSW - the rocker box oil line connection on my SQ4 certainly is.

Shout if you need help selecting the right bits - notice that a gauge connection usually uses a face seal - other connections use tapered nipples.
cheers

The oil gauge take off on my rocker boxes on my 48 nh is 1/4 cei. On a vb I would of thought it would be the same but the square appears like Simon says it's bsw. My repro gauge is 1/8 bsp. Oringal gauges seem to be the same other than how they seal. Alan Moore has a Oringal 30's gauge and like yours it's a lot smaller and is not bsp as the major diameter and tpi does not relate to bsp. This surprised me I thought they all were the same but obviously not! If someone else has an early gauge and has come across the same thing it would be helpful to you both Lee

All fittings and pipes are available from Drags, check your parts book for the part numbers, most parts books list the individual fittings. Complete pipes also available but you will need to specify original gauge as the modern copies use a different fitting and the pipe assemblies are made to suit those rather than the original.

Hi Roger,

First place I tried, unfortunately they were unable to help.. They only had the pipe for the new repro gauges. I must admit I didn’t ask for individual fittings .. I’ll have another look.

Cheers
