1938 SQUARE FOUR CLUTCH PLATES

Postby ralph thetford » Mon Jun 10, 2019 9:40 pm

I am now working on the clutch and wondered ----(1)what is the thickness of the cork inserts on a new disc and (2) what is the acceptable minimum thickness of the corks before they need replacing ?------I have measured mine and on average the thicknesses are approx 0.200 inches.

They don't seem to wear much. As long as the steel doesn't contact you can use them .Corks must not be loose. I would be happy with about 1/2 mm sticking proud of the steel surface, evenly both sides. If I did them new I'd go for a bit more. Facing them off flat is not easy. If they are too thick the discs pop out of the basket when you declutch and you lose drive.. Nev

Just now dug out the new clutch plates from AOMCC Gearbox spares.

The corks are near enough to 1/4" thick to make no difference.
