Main bearing in gear cover--1938 Ariel square four

Postby ralph thetford » Sat Jun 29, 2019 7:33 pm

How should the 3rd main bearing be lubricated on initial assembly---(This is the bearing in the gear cover)--- Should this be just oiled or should it be packed with grease.

Oil is all you need. But I would never start a Square Four after a rebuild without putting about a pint of oil in the sump. Yes, it will smoke a bit and throw some oil out but if you have an oiling problem such as an oil lock or the pipes connected the wrong way round it will safeguard the engine. And assuming all is well, the smoke and oil will be cleared very quickly so you can look forward to many happy miles on the bike.

Thank you again Paul---I wondered, with this bearing being outside the main oil flow, it may eventually get starved of oil, but you have now answered my question---Thanks and Regards Ralph
