Sidevalve Valve Collets

Postby tony.barnett » Sun Jul 28, 2019 8:06 am

Is there a knack to getting the valve collets back into a sidevalve? Been trying to reassemble the valves on my 1930 Model B and its fighting me all the way. Any hints or tips? Or special tools?

To answer my own question - after struggling with a number of different valve spring compressors then talking to Dave Owen and borrowing his modified compressor (I have modified my own now too) I have managed to fit the collets with the aid of a large socket over the valve head (difficulty compounded by it being a blind barrel). So it is possible without losing an eye or finger...

A bit of grease on the collets can sometimes help.

I recall putting the valves back in a friend's Ford van - with the 100E motor. Bloomin' thing, lying over the motor with my head near the steering rack, working upside down against gravity . . . . .

It was a long time ago and I was a great deal younger.

It wasn't so much the collets as getting the spring to compress straight so I can get both collets in. Sorted it eventually tho. Should be ready for Ireland.

Its surprising it doesnt have slotted stems and a cotter piece...........Terrys used to make a pressed steel piece with a little "handle" out one side that was an easy fit replacement for two split collets.
