Another new member

Postby JohnLay » Wed Aug 07, 2019 10:30 am

Hello, despite owning and ridden motorcycles for over 50 years I have never owned Ariel of any sort, until now that is. Bought sight unseen apart from photos from H&H auction.Very brave, or possibly a bit dumb. As it happened the machine is in excellent condition very pleased with it. As delivered it wouldn't start, could barely kick it over, however reading this forum soon identified the problem, sump full of oil. Drained it all out and poured it back into the oil tank, two kicks later and it's running like a Swiss watch, sounding wonderful. Just waiting on the DVLA now, should be on the road soon.

Thank you Dave, a quick check of the paperwork from the auctioneers shows it is in deed Mr, Reads machine, clearly a well looked after motorcycle.

That indeed is the KH owned by the late Chris Read. It was restored (and the restoration documented on this very forum) by myself and sold to Chris to aid a house purchase. I understand that Chris did a not insignificant amount of fettling after buying from me.

Prior to my ownership it had been sitting in the garage of the late Ralph Hawkins since 1983, and was sold to me by his widow, Bea, in I believe 2014.

Good to see it has reappeared.

I wonder what Chris did with the valve I installed to stop it from wet sumping?

Thank you Robert for the info. and Simon for the pointer to the restoration thread. It is always nice to know a bikes back history, something that's not always possible.
