Johnny,

That advice is highly likely to lead to the engine blowing up with (probably No 3) conrod exiting through the cases in around 500 miles. The only way to preserve the engine is to strip it completely, clean out the sludge traps, clean all internals scrupulously to remove old oil residues, fit an oil filter and only then run it on modern (detergent) oils. Otherwise, the detergent washes the old residues off the engine internals, they collect in the (tiny) sludge traps and block the oil path to the big end. Hence the loud bang and wrecked engine. The 500 miles comes from the Healey brothers who made a good living in the late 1960s and the 1970s from people putting detergent oils in Square Fours and needing a new set of engine parts as a result.

Yes . The centrifugal force separates the sludge and particles out of the oil and the left rear rod goes out of the case every time. With a motor like this it's a certainty to happen.. Take the screwed in plugs out and get the motor scrupulously clean then ride it. You don't have to recondition the engine IF it doesn't need it..Don't be tempted to ride it There's too much at stake. They don't make these new anymore. Nev.

Completely agree, but I wish I had x-ray eyes. My 4 came to me not ridden in 18 years, only started occasionally. So I stripped it down (easy part) and the galleries were super clean. Since then other things in life take have over and it has been 18 months and I still haven't had a ride. No regrets, I do like the peace of mind of seeing for myself, and I am doing some other improvements, but I wish I could have done a x-ray. Is this a service the Owners Club can do; x-ray crankshafts? (just kidding)

if i was do the oils i would have had the sump off and sludge traps out and if it got a filter in the oil tank that is what you do if you are going to do a proper job and if it is like black sludge in the sump i take the oil pump off and clean it then i fill it up and run to get it hot and drain it and clean it all again then wen i happy with it i use it that is what i had done my ones and i have had no trouble with them in the last 4000 m i just do the oils and all regular :!:
