Hi Nev

You are dead right, on threads, who ever had last had it in bits
had tightened the caps before the oil banjos and pulled the
shafts over, with the banjos done up first it pulls the shafts
over giving just a few thou clearance, I am now happy with that,
will run it tomorrow and see if it changes the noise.

Ralph,
Looks like you have got it sorted...as you have found tightening the acorn nut fully first is the correct way (this is the method written down in the owners instruction manual). This earlier topic may be helpful re the different types of spindle and how the rockers are set up.

One thing I have found is that the 70 odd year old CP speed'o is more accurate than
the last few modern bikes I have had.

For years most of the older biked I've ridden have had no speedo or odometer. It's just great to have one on the W/NG and it's the early type with trip meter where I can zero it at the beginning of a run and it's also accurate in both speed distance and rock steady. Only in reading as it goes up and down with the forks in a frightening way at times. At least the cable length stays constant. Nev

Now have a working oil guessing gauge, it rises from a cold start then sits at 20 psi
giving it a rev makes little or no difference but the engine as a pressure regulating
valve behind the oil pump, plenty for a roller bottom end,.

Work for winter, new seals for push rod tubes, and maybe a look at the cam and
rockers see if I can quieten it down a bit, I also suspect the magneto is a bit weak
when hot, I have at least one other mag so may have a look at that and a couple
of bushes and pins are worn in the forks.

Well the Best is now fitted with what could be it's org type 6 carb, the monoblock it's
been running with was much to big, it now starts well hot or cold so I will give it a few miles
and decide what next, I have one of those electronic ignitions that fit in the mag instead of
the points that I was going to fit but will see how it goes first.
I'ts blowing a touch of oil from the head joint so that wants doing though I have had a tempting offer
for it but I am quite getting to like it it's one of the best rigides I have ridden so it can stay a wile yet.

Well it's running rich at small throttle openings and soot'ing the plug up,
seems fine when accelerating changing the slide from 3 to 4 as helped,
lots of ware on the needle and is a bit on the big side, new jets and needle
are on the way from Amal then we will see how we go from there.

Now running well on the type 6, the new needle and needle jet worked,
plug is a nice color and it's doing around 100 mpg, starts ok hot or cold
but still think I will fit the electronic ign kit.
Going to fit it and do the head joint over the cold weather, it rides quite well
think it could do with a slightly bigger main jet but it's very close to being right.

It's a web site were you can enter your vehicles , fuel ups and miles and it gives a read out
of the MPG of the vehicle, you can also look up the mpg people are getting from their vehicles.
By link I take it you mean the box with a little pic of the ariel
and a number that is the mpg, The site is nothing to do with me other than I have been
using it for a number of years with no problems you are the first to mention it.
In the UK sites are now required to ask before setting cookies, and you usually
get a choice of which to set, before this came in they would just set then and
we knew nothing about it.
