2 Stroke Picture of the day Mallory Park 2010

Postby Roger James » Sat Nov 17, 2012 8:03 am

Good Morning all Ariel enthusiasts home and abroad,
Here is, 2 Stroke Picture of the day.
Following on from a previous thread regarding the two Rogers riding their Leaders at Mallory Park in 2009 we thought it would be good to try and encourage other Leader owners to join us at same event in 2010 - after putting out repeated requests fo fellow 2 Stroke Ariel enthusiasts this resulted in another 5 owners agreeing to ride with us, another Leader and 4 Arrows and they all turned up in July 2010.
On the day in the holding area we found we were in company with another Sports Arrow rider who was not part of our group and had booked in of his own accord, nice surprise for him and swelled our numbers in 2010 to 8 Ariel 2 Strokes, three Leaders and five Arrows, brilliant (although I was already thinking of trying to get more for 2011).
We all had a fabulous time riding our machines together on track. Afterwards everyone was full of enthusiasm to return again the following year.
First photograph in this series for 2010 is of the majority of the bikes and owners getting ready to go into the Holding area....

Why dont you consider joining us at Mallory Park in 2013? any Ariel motorcycle welcome.

Jess

Good Morning,
Another photo this morning of the Leader's and Arrow's gathered together at the 2010 event just prior to going into the Holding Area..
Coudn't quite get the guys to line the bikes up in a decent concours type line up for the photo shoot and to be viewed by visiting spectators. Flying the flag for the little Ariel motorcycles.

Good Morning,
2 Stroke picture of the day. This is a photo of the Arrow at the far end of the line up in the previous two pictures of Brian Hinchliffe's Arrow Special on which he has carried out many modifications including manufacture and fitting of Alloy barrels.
If the name appears familiar for Leader/Arrow owners it probably is, Brian is a Ariel Club member who manufacturers and sells an amazing array of items including the major workshop tools you would need to strip down and rebuild your engine, new petrol taps, choke rods, alloy bumper bars, parking lights and much more...(Brian is usually in attendance with a stall at the club Autojumble ).
Brian also owns a Leader on which he has fitted fibreglass side panels that split in half making it easy to remove just the top section of the panel leaving the bottom section in place to make adjustments to carb etc, check the filter or adjust the clutch cable, very clever...saves a lot of hassle in comparison to removing the complete side panels to make these minor adjustments. Another modification recently carried out by Brian has been to fit a hinged door on the nearside panel so he can access the tickler on the carb to aid cold starting.

Good Morning,
Here is your 2 Stroke picture of the day.
Mallory Park 2010 and close up shot of Walter Venters Arrow, I think the half fairing is obvious but note the expansion chambers, when Walter takes the Arrow out on track he doesnt hang about on it....

Good Morning Ariel enthusiasts,
A bit late this morning, sorry about that, a bit busy answering Ariel questions on another forum.
Here is 2 Stroke Picture of the day, a closer shot of the ex City of Sheffield Police Leader that took part in the track sessions at Mallory Park in 2010. Complete with Police worded sign on screen and replica Cossor handset on bodyshell, purpose made rear carrier with replica Aveley Aerial base unit attached, (had to remove the whip aerial for the ride on circuit) and outside lifting handle, much better to use than the standard handle that pushes into the bodyshell, what you cannot see is the speaker mounted on a bracket on the offside behind the front shield or the bracket welded inside the nearside pannier to take a second battery to help power the radio.
The radio receiver/transmitter box unit fits inside the bodyshell parcel compartment resting on brackets bolted to the top of the frame with the radio handset bolted on top of the unit. To accomodate this the lid was removed and a larger hole cut into the bodyshell with the sharp edges covered with a simple fibreglass cowl.
Ariel supplied approx 300 Leaders to various Police forces with some retaining their use for several years on general patrol work.

Good Morning,
2 Stroke picture of the day. Staying with Mallory 2010, all the motorcycles you have seen in the previous photographs have now been moved into the Holding Area to await their turn to be taken out on track. Not all of the machines are in this shot, but it gives you a good idea of what the Holding area is like positioned right alongside the track, with many more machines of different marque's and models out of view to the left of picture.
When this photo was taken you will notice riders were off their bikes and some had removed helmets and even jackets, it was a hot day and there had been an incident on track and the session in progress stopped, this could have been the result of an accident or sometimes oil dropped on the track that needed to be cleaned up, usually riders would be sitting on their machines waiting for the two signs at the front to be turned around for the riders to see, that would tell them to Start Engines....Gets a bit noisy at this stage, too noisy for anyone to tell you to start your engine, hence the signs...

Good Morning Everyone,
Ariel Picture of the day rather than 2 Stroke Picture of the day.
This is the Holding Area showing the Leader and Arrow motorcycles but look to the left, machine number 997, according to the programme its a 1951, 500 Red Hunter entered by Ian Kenworthy.
There's usually a wide range of Ariel machines taking part in these track sessions from the Ariel 3 to Square Four...

Why dont you join us in 2013 at The Festival of 1000 Bikes rally at Mallory Park scheduled for July, entry application forms issued by The V.M.C.C. are usually out third week in December, that might sound early for an event in July but better to get booked in early, leave it too late and you'll find it fully booked up. 1400 machines last year....

Have a good weekend and if you are going into the shed or garage - Happy Spannering - I'll be doing a bit on the Arrow and Leader projects.

Good Morning,
Mallory 2010 and the 2 Strokes out on track.. Its easy enough to photograph the machines when they are static but not so easy when they are out on track unless you have a very good camera as used by the official photographer.
Here is a photo taken by a friend of two Leaders and a Sports Arrow travelling down Kirkby Straight, although Rogers Leader is unfortunately masked by two other machines, note the 3 Two strokes are not leaving a trail of smoke as you might expect although the travelling Marshall behind is keeping a discreet distance...
Its a great feeling travelling flat out on the little 2 Strokes like this in company with other riders on similar machines especially on the Leader carrying all the panel work of screen, leg shields, side panels and panniers..and aged overweight riders (me anyway) but still giving a good account of themselves..

Roll on Mallory 2013 - come and join us on your Ariel...
