Wheel offsets

Postby steveburton » Wed Sep 19, 2018 7:21 am

Does anyone have the wheel offsets for the front and rear wheels of a half width hub Huntmaster please?

From memory, both front and rear brake drum faces are offset from the edge of the rims,

These are half width hubs NOT full width hubs

The centre of the wheel rim should be central between the spoke flanges, the distance you refer to is not the offset but a dimension from the brake drum to the edge of the rim; this will vary with the width of the rim whereas the offset figure will not.

As I said the offset is the same for all wheels with the one exception half width, full width, red ones, small ones on W/NG, Colts etc

Well roger, thanks for your help.

As for the distance that the brake drum sticks out from the edge of the wheel rim, this is the measurement that I am after, it will not vary, it will be the same for all half width Huntmasters, this is the measurement several wheel builders I have spoken to call the offset,

No need to reply to this roger thanks.

The distance between the face of the brake drum and the face of the rim is not the same for all half width hub Huntmasters as some were fitted with 20" wheels in 1954 whereas 19" wheels were the norm in 1955. 20" wheels used a WM1 rim whereas 19" wheels used a WM2 rim. Hence the different measurements.

One of these days, when I get round to it, I will write an article for Cheval de Fer including a table of these measurements, but getting the table correct is somewhat fraught.

Roger's advice, which is the same as that from the Ariel Works Service Manager, CW Waller, is sound.
