Re: Thread size and type - kick start ratchet nut

I would be surprised if the thread on the mainshaft ratchet nut were 1/2" UNF since the Unified thread standard didn't come out until 1948 and I believe this nut has been used in Burman gearboxes since the early 1930's. I would be more inclined to suspect it was a 1/2 x 20 cycle thread which is...

Re: 4469 piston rebore clearance

Dave, Roger, Paul - Thanks for the advice, I'll ask the machinist to aim for 0.004 on the rebore. Since the piston is going to be running in a newly rebored cylinder, what is the benefit of the lapping-in? I would have thought that the running-in process itself would remove any slight high points on...

4469 piston rebore clearance

Does anybody out there know the recommended rebore clearance for a 4469 slipper piston in an iron engine?

It will be used in a '49 NH350 with an earlier (3/16" plunger) oil pump.

Re: NH air filter hose wanted

What's a 262, excuse my ignorance?

Maybe it's an Amal 2622 Mike is referring to - i.e. a 22mm MkII concentric?

Re: Best material for steel pushrods

...would you explain exactly how the ends were removed? My donor tubes were damaged already so I simple cut them and used a 5/16 bar to tap off the ends from the inside. If you don't want to damage the tubes (e.g. just shortening longer ones), I would suggest a split die with a 7/16" hole plac...

Best material for steel pushrods

I need to make some new pushrods for an iron VH. I have removed the end fittings from some old NH pushrods and the old tube appears to be 7/16"x20G steel of some kind. What is the best material for the new (longer) pushrods? I have some 316Lx20G seamless stainless tube that seems to be about th...

Re: 350 iron head vs. 500 iron head

500 - 85.5mm
350 - 76.5mm

The two measurements are from slightly different generation heads. The 350 is from a '47 and the 500 is a later "big fin" head. I don't know if that makes any difference.

I hope this helps, Pete

Re: 350 iron head vs. 500 iron head

The 500 is about 18mm higher from a quick measurement from crankcase mouth to rockerbox.

This the difference of combined barrel and head - I can measure head and barrel separately if you need.
