First, if inadvertant, start! 1946 VB600

Postby garycullen » Tue Apr 20, 2021 10:45 pm

With my thanks to all members who offered advice and help for this project last year or so.

Gary's VB600
I finished most of the wiring over the weekend, now just waiting for the horn to arrive, but I have been regularly kicking it over to keep the oil pump primed and the big end oiled.
Anyway I decided to do a setup of the controls from the user guide, coke, adv/retard, valve lifter as a practice for an eventual start but a thought went through my head that said, I wonder what would happen if I put some petrol in the tank, turned on the tap, tickled the carb then tried a kick ?
Well or course it started….

https://youtu.be/PG6nAB6QJCw

makes a nice chuffing sound, and I am chuffed!

Anyway I stopped it after a few minutes and tried again and couldn’t repeat the exercise.
Then discovered petrol dripping from the bottom of the carb. Inspection showed the tickler jammed down so the engine was flooded.
Took the bowl off and found the tickler return spring protruding through the bowel lid was jamming the tickler down.
Fixed that with a new spring and second kick away we go.

Whilst on the stand I tried tentatively to put it in gear but only result was a graunching noise, so some cutch adjustment next I think.

I now have to think about how to get it registered and warranted and the first thing I need is a period NZ number plate.

cheers
Gary

Good work Gary ready for a lap round Pukeakaurie, I assume to get club plates there you need to be a member of a vintage bike club. I Oz we don't have to get a regular warrant of fitness just a check by a club machine examiner.

Thanks Brian. Not to sure about a lap round Pukekohe! ( took me a sec to interpret your spelling) VB's are not renown for speed.
I am told they are sedate but I guess I will find out soon.
I am a member if the NZ Ariel Register so I am hoping to find a plate among the spares. The register will assist in dating and getting NZTA to accept registration. I am not sure how vintage/veteran bikes are checked for warrant of Fitness here yet.

Thanks Eero,
Yes it has come together well.
I tried to keep faith with Ariel’s Provinceal de lux look. Sort of late Art Deco.
It is not a concourse show bike at all as plenty about it is fitted as to hand or easily obtained with an eye to being reliable when out for a run.

Hi Gary,
Well done Gary - looks fabulous.
I got an indicator & brake light exemption through the NZ VCC when I got my 1950 VB registered in Chch. Didn't occur to me it was even possible to get a period correct plate in N Z.

I fitted a 23 tooth engine sprocket. It is happy chuffing along at 80 to 90 km/hr. Will do a bit over 100 km/hr, but it's not something I'd do for any length of time. The least powerful bike I've ever owned, but the most fun to ride :). Cheers, Bevan
p.s.
A couple of suggestions:
- lockwire your tank bolts
- ensure your carb bell mouth is very firmly screwed on
You can guess how I realised these were good ideas !

Also, the bike was running perfectly on a ride last week when I happened to glance down the right hand side - was horrified to see petrol pissing out from the carb - the jet/float bowl securing nut had worked loose. Turned the fuel off and let it run out of petrol before coming to a halt; could have had a very nasty ending !

Thanks for the VCC advice Bevan, the Ariel Register has done a few of these renewing registration over the years so after Graeme returns from the current rally we will see what further items are required.
I sent you a PM regarding valve spring compressor. There is a retro one on Trademe, need a bolt replacing but should clean up fine.
Have tank and sump plate lock wired on.
My bell mouth ,with gauze, sits real close to the oil tank. I had to remove a part of th rim to get a fit. I have to loosen the oil tank bolts to move it back enough to rotate the bell mouth off. If it does unwind a bit the oil tank should stop it.
Cheers

My PM’s don’t seem to be going through.
Search valve spring compressor on Trademe and you should find it a couple of pages down. He wants $20 for it. If you don’t take it I will, although I already have two.

Hi Gary - no pm received as you said.

Can't see it on Trademe, perhaps its sold already.

Cheers, Bevan
