VB600 top speed?

Postby john.whiting » Fri Jun 11, 2021 11:15 am

What is the normal top speed of a 600 VB of about 1950 vintage ,with a cast iron head?.....The reason I ask is road tests of sidevalves dont seem to have been done,or if they were ,the bike was hitched to a sidecar, and geared to 50mph .....The speed figure is needed to compare with a JAP 600 Mk3 engined bike...which is incidentally a 1950 twin rigid frame and cycle parts.

My 1951 VB would reach an indicated speed of up to 60mph if there was no headwind or uphill slope and I would be lying on the tank for that.

It's very cruel but I was a teenager then and didn't possess a fully developed brain.

My solo geared 1950 VB will cruise pretty happily at 50 mph. Out of curiosity, I have very briefly had it over an indicated 60 mph, but she was revving pretty hard. Wasn't actually at full throttle, but I'm not going to inflict that punishment on it again ! Cheers, Bevan

I would have thought the 600 with 15hp would be considerably quicker...I must confess ,although I ve owned SV singles ,Ive never ridden one on the road more than a run around the block.

I once had an indicated 73mph on my 1957 VB - flat on the tank heading for the Severn Bridge (with a following wind) and my thumb jammed between the bar and the advance lever :o .

No wonder it used to shed bits along the road.

Well, I was only 23 at the time  .

It's not about the speed on a VB, happy to plod at 50 with some in reserve. If you want speed get an ohv, single twin or sq4

Coming back from Gloucester today, I only saw 50mph once. She falters a bit after 50 which I suspect is the 250 main jet. But the vibration makes me falter at 50 also :D
